The city in the mirror
Reflected fragments of urban space.
** Modern cities are becoming more and more fragmented, saturated by visual noise. Within that noise, thousands of mirrors of any shape – attached to vehicles and meant to provide safety from what can’t be directly seen – fragment even more what is already in pieces. And yet, those reflected fragments come through their reflection into focus – if just for a second. The city becomes their background. While the reflected object is part of the city itself, its reflection manages to become detached from it.
** The focus of the project is the way reflective surfaces can capture fleeting images that both belong to and diverge from their environment. This relationship between reflection and reality invites us to explore the layers of complexity that define modern cities. As a result, we might uncover a deeper narrative woven into the fabric of our urban landscapes. Each mirror can become as a window into the alternate realities of our cities—stories that challenge the chaos and reveal hidden connections. As we navigate through the modern city, mirrors invite us to reconsider our perception of space and its identity, possibly suggesting that the character of a city is not only found in what we see, but also in the myriad reflections that shape our collective experience.
** The city in the mirror, therefore, is a collection of 406 fragments that, when assembled together, form a psychogeographical map that tells a different story of the city.
