The Acropolis and the Parthenon have been codifying the constituting principles of western culture for a long time. Both as a way to look back to an ideal past that can’t be reached anymore, and as the belief to the concept of progress. After all, they are both: an ideal past and the outcome of a process of continuous development. Their architecture, however, the ‘crown of order’, is based on the application of strictly defined standards. As such, they function also as a symbol of the dominance of logic and rational thinking over the mythical, the magical and the irrational. They operate in parallel with Euripidean drama – the triumph of Apollo over Dionysus.
However, the Acropolis and the Parthenon became a relic of western culture without their masks; the colorful dress that transformed them into scaffolds destined to become the backdrop for long-lost ancient rituals. By losing their original mask, however, they become themselves one: A mask that covers and modulates our current condition by deforming the dominance of logic, progress and western principles at large.

Η Ακρόπολη και ο Παρθενώνας συμπυκνώνουν τις δομικές αξίες του δυτικού πολιτισμού. Τόσο από την άποψη της αναπόλησης (ένα μνημείο αποκτά αξία μέσω της έκτασης του χρόνου που έπεται της δημιουργίας του) όσο και από την άποψη της προόδου (ένα μνημείο αποκτά αξία μέσω της έκτασης του χρόνου που προηγήθηκε της δημιουργίας του). Με άλλα λόγια, η ακρόπολη συμβολίζει τόσο τα ιδανικά του παρελθόντος ως μία ιδανική συνθήκη όσο και αυτά της προόδου, όντας η ίδια το επιστέγασμα μία τέτοιας διαδικασίας.
Λειτουργούν όμως και στα δύο επίπεδα πάντα μέσα από το πρίσμα της λογικής. Η ίδια τους η αρχιτεκτονική είναι το αποκορύφωμα του ρυθμού. Της ύπαρξης συγκεκριμένων προτύπων που ορίζουν τις μορφές, τις αναλογίες και τα μεγέθη τους. Ως τέτοια λειτουργούν και ως ένα κατεξοχήν σύμβολο του εξοστρακισμού του κάθε τι άλογου, βάρβαρου, μυθικού και μαγικού. Ως άλλη Ευριπίδεια τραγωδία, συμβολίζουν το θρίαμβο της Απολλώνιας σκέψης πάνω στην Διονυσιακή.
Η Ακρόπολη και ο Παρθενώνας ως σύμβολο του δυτικού πολιτισμού όμως, συγκροτήθηκαν ξεχνώντας – ή αγνοώντας – τη μάσκα τους. Τη φωτεινή, πολύχρωμη επικάλυψη που τους έντυνε μετατρέποντάς τους σε σκαλωσιά. Στο ιδανικό σκηνικό για τις αρχέγονες τελετουργίες που λάμβαναν χώρα μπροστά τους. Μέσα από την απώλεια της αρχικής τους μάσκας όμως, μετατρέπονται πλέον τα ίδια σε μία νέα μάσκα επικάλυψης και αλλοίωσης της σημερινής μας συνθήκης˙ μία μάσκα παραμόρφωσης του θριάμβου της λογικής, της προόδου και εν γένη του αφηγήματος του δυτικού πολιτισμού.
