The project understands the city as an ecosystem containing many areas of different characteristics, where open and green spaces are places carrying the opportunity to enhance natural conditions. It looks, therefore, for the city’s natural structure, where the intervention axis plays a very important role: It is the binding spine that connects fragmented green and open spaces both in a local and in a metropolitan scale. The spine functions in several different ways: apart from being a green corridor, it becomes the symbolic, cultural, social and economic center of Athens.
At the same time the project looks also at the local scale, the neighborhood, at spaces like small squares, public building gardens or terraces, pedestrian streets and several interior blocks; spaces embedded with a virtually infinite number of possibilities waiting to be activated. These ‘secondary’ public spaces are connected together through the main spine. Therefore, it is the operation in both of the two different levels, the local and the global/metropolitan, that allows the project to enable the possibilities of the public space in the center of Athens. The driving force behind this approach is the belief that the public space belongs to the people who inhabit it – local citizens, immigrants, visitors – and should therefore be delivered to them: Above all, the proposal seeks to create a place, an essence and to reinforce life in the street so that people can occupy it.
A cropped lineal architectural element, present throughout the spine, connects different typological interventions. The lineal element changes direction inviting people to discover the places behind the central spine, it opens the view to the monumental squares, while at the same time it organizes urban spaces and furniture. A variety of typological sections create different atmospheres along the spine with the help of plants, pavement treatment and material colors.
Sustainability is one of the primary concerns of the project. The variety of the vegetation employed, increases the biodiversity, while the vegetation itself works as a generator of local microclimate. The use of the appropriate surface materials allow for sustainable water drainage. The color of hard material paving is referencing the color of the stones of the surrounding mountains while the material itself comes from local sources when that is possible.
Different areas of importance are treated separately, while always connected through the linear architectural element. The Omonoia Square becomes primarily a place for people to meet, rest and enjoy the street life. Several green areas are created in order to accommodate leisure activities, while a large number of trees is employed in order to provide the necessary shading conditions. A café and a kiosk are placed inside the square in order to intensify the human activity, while a large canopy structure in placed centrally, becoming a landmark that can be identified with the square. The area in front of the Trilogy follows more ‘austere’ lines in order to enhance its monumentality, but at the same time the parcels of the three buildings are treated in ways that will allow people to inhabit them.

Η πρόταση αντιλαμβάνεται την πόλη ως ένα οικοσύστημα που περιλαμβάνει περιοχές με διαφορετικά χαρακτηριστικά, όπου όλοι οι ανοικτοί και δημόσιοι χώροι έχουν εν δυνάμει τη δυνατότητα να δημιουργήσουν ιδιαίτερες τοπικές συνθήκες. Κοιτάει τη φυσική δομή της πόλης μέσα στη οποία ο άξονας της επέμβασης παίρνει το ρόλο μίας συνδετικής ραχοκοκαλιάς που ενώνει τους ως τώρα διεσπαρμένους ανοικτούς χώρους. Η ραχοκοκαλιά αυτή λειτουργεί σε πολλά διαφορετικά επίπεδα: Πέρα από το να ορίζει έναν ‘πράσινο’ άξονα, μετατρέπεται στο συμβολικό, πολιτισμικό, κοινωνικό και οικονομικό κέντρο της Αθήνας.
Ταυτόχρονα η πρόταση κοιτάζει και στο τοπικό επίπεδο, τη γειτονιά, σε χώρους όπως μικρές πλατείες, κήπους και οροφές κτιρίων, πεζόδρομους και ακάλυπτους κτιρίων· χώροι που φέρουν μέσα τους έναν δυνητικά άπειρο αριθμό δυνατοτήτων που περιμένουν να ενεργοποιηθούν. Όλοι αυτοί οι δευτερεύοντες χώροι ενώνονται μεταξύ τους μέσω της ‘ραχοκοκαλιάς’. Επομένως είναι αυτή η ταυτόχρονη αντιμετώπιση του τοπικού και του μητροπολιτικού επιπέδου που επιτρέπει στην πρόταση να ενεργοποιήσει όλες τις κρυμμένες δυνατότητες του κέντρου της Αθήνας. Η κινητήριος δύναμη πίσω από αυτή την προσέγγιση είναι η θέση ότι ο δημόσιος χώρος ανήκει στους ανθρώπους που τον κατοικούν – ντόπιους, μετανάστες, επισκέπτες – και για αυτό πρέπει να ‘παραδοθεί’ σε αυτούς: Πάνω από όλα, η πρόταση προσπαθεί να δημιουργήσει ένα τόπο, μία αίσθηση, που θα ενισχύσει τη ζωή στο δημόσιο χώρο και θα επιτρέψει στους κατοίκους να τον καταλάβουν.
Ένα τεθλασμένο αρχιτεκτονικό στοιχείο ‘ακολουθεί’ τη ραχοκοκαλιά και ενώνει διαφορετικές τυπολογικές επεμβάσεις. Αλλάζει κατεύθυνση όπου χρειάζεται ώστε να οδηγήσει τους κατοίκους να ανακαλύψουν τους διάφορους επιμέρους, ‘κρυμμένους’ χώρους, κατευθύνει το βλέμμα στις πιο κεντρικές πλατείες και οργανώνει το χώρο δημιουργώντας όρια, συνδέσεις και αστική επίπλωση. Κατά μήκος του άξονα, διαφορετικές φυτεύσεις, χρώματα και υλικά επιδιώκουν να δημιουργήσουν διαφορετικές ‘ατμόσφαιρες’ και συνθήκες.
Η αντιμετώπιση οικολογικών ζητημάτων αποτελεί ένα από τα κύρια μελήματα της πρότασης. Το μεγάλο εύρος στα είδη φυτεύσεων που χρησιμοποιούνται ενισχύει τη βιοποικιλότητα και βοηθάει στη διαμόρφωση του μικροκλίματος. Η χρήση κατάλληλων υλικών επιτρέπει την επαρκή αποστράγγιση των όμβριων υδάτων. Τα χρώματα των δαπέδων προκύπτουν από τα χρώματα που συναντάμε στα πετρώματα των γύρω βουνών ενώ τα υλικά που χρησιμοποιούνται προέρχονται, όπου είναι δυνατό, από τοπικές πηγές.
Σημεία της επέμβασης με σημαντικό χαρακτήρα αντιμετωπίζονται κάθε φορά με διαφορετικούς τρόπους, ενώ το γραμμικό αρχιτεκτονικό στοιχείο που τα διατρέχει φροντίζει να υπενθυμίζει τον ενιαίο χαρακτήρα της επέμβασης. Η πλατεία Ομόνοιας μετατρέπεται σε ένα χώρο που έχει ως βασικό του στόχο να προσελκύσει τον κόσμο, να δημιουργήσει ένα τόπο που θα είναι ενεργός και ζωντανός καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της ημέρας. Ένας αρκετά μεγάλος αριθμός φυτεύσεων παρέχει τον απαραίτητο σκιασμό. Ένα καφέ και ένα πωλητήριο τοποθετούνται μέσα στην πλατεία ώστε να ενισχύσουν ακόμα περισσότερο την ανθρώπινη δραστηριότητα, ενώ ένα χαρακτηριστικό στέγαστρο τοποθετείται κεντρικά στην πλατεία έτσι ώστε να λειτουργήσει εν είδη τοπόσημου. Ο χώρος μπροστά από την Τριλογία σχεδιάζεται με πιο λυτές γραμμές έτσι ώστε να υπογραμμίσει την μνημιακότητα των κτιρίων, αλλά ταυτόχρονα τα παρτέρια των τριών κτιρίων τροποποιούνται ώστε να μπορέσουν να γίνουν και αυτά ενεργά μέρη του δημόσιου χώρου.
